F1 the Movie: Everything you need to know about the upcoming Brad Pitt movie
Formula 1 is gearing up for its most ambitious film debut yet.

After years of speculation and unprecedented filming at the heart of the motorsport world, ‘F1 the Movie’ already has a release date and cast, with scenes even filmed during real Grand Prix events. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and starring Brad Pitt, the film seeks to capture the adrenaline, drama, and spectacle that have made Formula 1 one of the most watched sports in the world.
Although there have been films about Formula 1 in the past, such as Rush (2013), Grand Prix (1966), and the documentary Weekend of a Champion (1972), few have managed to capture the essence of the sport in real time. ‘F1 the Movie’ promises to be a game-changer by combining cinematic spectacle with unprecedented access to the tracks, teams, and environments that bring the sport to life.
What is ‘F1 The Movie’ about?
The movie introduces us to Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt, a driver who retired prematurely after an accident in the 1990s. Years later, Hayes receives a second chance thanks to the invitation of his old friend Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), who proposes him return as a driver for a new fictitious team called Apex Grand Prix (APXGP).
Hayes’ return to the track will not be easy. Not only does he have to adapt to a sport that has evolved, but he also has to work alongside the young and ambitious Joshua ‘Noah’ Pearce (played by Damson Idris), with whom he will share the garage and the limelight. The tense mentor-mentee relationship, full of rivalry and pride, is set to be one of the film’s most dramatic storylines.
Who is in the cast of F1 the Movie?
The cast of F1 the Movie includes an impressive mix of international talent. In addition to Pitt, Idris, and Bardem, it features Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Tobias Menzies (The Crown), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso), Kim Bodnia, Abdul Salis, and Samson Kayo.
Filmed at real Grand Prix venues
One of the film’s main attractions is its hyper-realistic approach. The production team filmed scenes during official Formula 1 weekends at famous circuits such as Silverstone, Spa, and Monaco, as well as at the Mexican Grand Prix. At the latter, they even filmed a sequence in which Brad Pitt’s character wins the 2024 race.
To achieve the desired level of authenticity, real, modified Formula 2 single-seaters were used, with the chassis adapted to simulate F1 cars according to 2022 regulations. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris performed many of their scenes at speeds of up to 180 mph under the supervision of professionals and with the backing of the FIA.

Lewis Hamilton is a key figure in the production.
Behind the scenes, an important figure is seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who serves as producer and consultant. He has worked closely with the scriptwriting and production teams to ensure a faithful portrayal of the sport, from pit protocols to cockpit emotions.
Through his production company, Dawn Apollo Films, Hamilton helped connect the production with teams, technical staff, and championship organizers. This facilitated unprecedented access to real locations and the paddock.
F1 the movie release date
Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed that F1 the Movie will be released in U.S. and Canadian theaters on June 27 in both conventional and IMAX formats.
