Playground Games

Fable just got a gigantic first trailer full of next-gen graphics and sense of humor

Xbox Games Showcase 2023 started with a bang, unveiling the first official trailer for a new Fable by Playground Games, Microsoft’s secret weapon.

Update:
Fable

Just as many of us suspected, Fable has been unleashed as one of Microsoft’s big reveals during the Xbox Games Showcase 2023. The reboot of the franchise has made an appearance

Let’s remember that the game is developed by Playground Games, the creators of the Forza Horizon series, who have dared to take a leap of faith and have gone from driving games to the RPG genre. A complicated change that seems to have worked out for them and that claims them as one of the fittest studios on Xbox.

The typical humor the series is known for is back in full force, with a farmer being interviewed about his point of view towards “heroes”. From chicken kicking to monster slaying, you can see a hero making their way through Albion i what has been promised to be actual gameplay footage. Impressive if true, but one could expect amazing graphics from the creators of the Forza Horizon series.

The curse that haunts the Fable series

Oldtimers in the Xbox universe will remember a time when Microsoft did not have Halo, Gears and Forza as a great trident, but to Halo, Gears and Fable. That was the level of importance of the franchise, which also catapulted Peter Molyneux and Lionhead Studios. However, since Fable 3 (released in 2010), the saga was seen as a magical project, and they began exploiting it in an exaggerated way so much that they lost their studio lead. Molyneux left, Lionhead closed, and the result was a dark era in whicht he brand seemed cursed and each delivery doomed to fail.

  • Fable Heroes (2012) - 55 on Metacritic
  • Fable The Journey (2012) - 61 onc Metacritic
  • Fable Legends (2013) - Canceled
  • Fable Anniversary (2014) - 68 ong Metacritic
  • Fable Fortune (2017) - 63 on Metacritic

Its resurrection at the hands of Playground Studios would be great news for the Xbox family and for Phil Spencer. In the aftermath after the redfall bump and the failed purchase of Activision Blizzard (at least for now), the head of the division needs some wins. If Fable is up to it, it would help to show that his new way of conducting studios works, because Playground has flourished under his tenure. In any case, We can’t wait to return to Albion!
