Fallout 5 has reportedly been greenlit... with a new team possibly leading development

Bethesda is busy with Elder Scrolls VI, so Microsoft may be spinning up a fresh crew for the next wasteland adventure.

Update:

After years of speculation, Fallout 5 has reportedly been fully greenlit by Microsoft and Bethesda, according to Windows Central’s Jez Corden on the Xbox Two Podcast. While fans have long assumed the next mainline entry would follow The Elder Scrolls VI, new reports suggest that development may begin sooner than expected, with a new team potentially taking the reins.

Who’s making Fallout 5?

Bethesda Game Studios is currently focused on:

  • Starfield DLC
  • The Elder Scrolls VI, which is still in full production

Because of this, Corden speculates that a separate team, possibly spun up internally or assigned from another studio, could be tasked with developing Fallout 5. He emphasized that this part is not yet confirmed, but it’s a logical move given Bethesda’s workload.

What happened to ‘Project Blackbird’?

Corden also claimed that the cancellation of ZeniMax Online’s MMO project, codenamed Blackbird, may have freed up resources for Fallout 5. However, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier disputed this, stating that the cancellation was due to budget cuts—not a strategic shift toward Fallout.

The timing aligns with renewed interest in the franchise:

With Fallout 4 nearing its 10-year anniversary, fans have been eager for a new single-player entry, and Microsoft appears to be listening.

Even with the greenlight, Fallout 5 is likely years away. Bethesda’s priority remains The Elder Scrolls VI, and no official teaser, concept art, or studio assignment has been announced. Expect a long wait, possibly into the late 2020s.
