‘Fallout’ TV series executive producer, Jonathan Nolan, says they “know all about Fallout 5”

The team behind the ‘Fallout’ Prime Video series worked closely with Bethesda, so some information was shared about upcoming plans for the games.

On April 12, 2024, the ‘Fallout’ live-action adaptation will premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video. The series based on the popular video game franchise will not be a direct retelling of any specific game, instead seeking its own place within the world with its own story inside the mythology. Jonathan Nolan, executive producer of the series and director of various episodes, commented in an interview with Total Film that the project is “almost like we’re Fallout 5. From the first conversation with Todd [Howard], we were most excited about an original story.”

Graham Wagner, showrunner of the series, later joked in an interview with Den of Geek that “I think we made Fallout 6.” Nolan added that they “know all about Fallout 5, we’re not telling anyone,” revealing that during the production, Bethesda’s Todd Howard shared some details of what they had planned for the next game in the franchise so as to not overlap themes or concepts.

“Well, there were some things where I said, ‘Don’t do this because we are going to do that in Fallout 5,” said Howard, who acted as an executive producer in the show. “It wasn’t the translation of an existing story. It was, what would the next thing be? It just happens to be a TV show.”

‘Fallout’ is well under way to being one of the best adaptations of the year

According to Nolan, “Fallout, in my career, is closest to the work we did in adapting Batman, where there’s so much storytelling in the Batman universe that there is no canonical version of it, so you’re free to invent your own. Each of the [Fallout] games is a discrete story – different city, distinct protagonist – within the same mythology. Our series sits in relation to the games as the games sit in relation to each other.”

‘Fallout’ premieres its first three episodes on April 12, 24, on Prime Video.
