Update:

The release of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ had left audiences skeptical after professional critics tore it to shreds. However, the film hit theaters worldwide yesterday and made a spectacular debut. It is estimated that in its first 24 hours, it will gross between $35 million and $38 million, which would surpass the $31 million earned by the original film in 2023.

Despite this strong start, Universal’s estimates are more conservative, projecting that the film will gross $128.2 million in its first three days and reach $186 million in just five days—a figure lower than that of the first film, which grossed $204.6 million in its first five days. And when it comes to reviews, audiences are tipping the scales and contradicting the critics; currently, the film has an average score of 92 out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes, while the press score is just 42 out of 100.

A divisive movie?

Much of the gaming press believes that ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ turned out to be a disappointment due to issues stemming from its fast-paced nature. For our part, here at MeriStation USA, we believe it’s a movie that knows its place and doesn’t try to be anything more than an entertaining experience.
