Fantastic Four director answers about THAT Thunderbolts* connection
Fantastic Four director clears up confusion with Thunderbolts post-credits scene.
Post-credits scenes in MCU movies have become a standard of superhero cinema. With a quick and simple scene, they managed for a long time to put pieces together or give us a preview of what we could expect in the future. A few months ago, Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers gave us a post-credits scene that hinted at the next movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and with it many theories about what would happen in that film. But if you’ve seen the latest from Marvel Studios, you may have been disappointed by the lack of connection, and there’s a reason.
Warning: Spoilers for Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers and Fantastic Four: First Steps below.
“Its like a relay race”
It’s a rather strange situation, but what happened in both movies doesn’t seem to match up. The post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers showed us the Fantastic 4’s ship, the Excelsior, arriving in the MCU. However, for those of you who have seen First Steps, you will realize that this never happened, nor was it intended to happen.
In an interview with Cinema Blend, Matt Shakman, director of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, revealed what’s behind this inconsistency, being that internal processes seem to be out of alignment.
“The Thunderbolts* end credit scene was also created, you know, relatively late in my process too, so that was not something that I was familiar with because it hadn’t been created at the time that I was working on my script, you know?”, mentioned Shakman. “I often use the metaphor of it [being] like a relay race, right? You pass the baton, you run your section of it as hard and fast as you can, do the best you can with your version of Fantastic Four – Earth 828, this world – and then you pass the baton, in this case to the Russo brothers.”
It should be noted that both the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene and The Fantastic Four: First Steps were filmed by the Russo brothers, who will be in charge of the upcoming Avengers movies. So, perhaps, the connection won’t be seen for another 18 months, when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters in December 2026.
