Few remember it: the controversial finale of ‘The Boys’ that nearly got censored for its resemblance to reality

An event that cast doubt on the season 4 finale.

The Boys

The finale of ‘The Boys’ is approaching. With just a few episodes left before the series created by Eric Kripke—an adaptation of Garth Ennis’s comic book—comes to a close, everything points to the fact that no one will be left indifferent. This is a show that has never shied away from pushing boundaries since its very first episode, though there was a pivotal moment at the end of season four that could have changed everything and left the production team facing a critical decision.

Despite its deliberately exaggerated tone, ‘The Boys’ has featured scenes that are disturbingly realistic. This satire of the superhero genre exaggerates contemporary social and political conflicts, but in the Season 4 finale, the show came so close to reality that Amazon nearly pulled the episode before its release. Ultimately, a solution was found, and the catalyst was Donald Trump.

A disturbing coincidence that put the episode’s premiere on hold

The eighth and final episode of season four premiered on July 18, 2024, just a few days after the attack on Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Kripke recalled that moment in an interview with Polygon: “It created a lot of anxiety because I directed that one. I had a lot of emotional eggs in that basket, and there was a very real possibility that they were going to delay its airing. It went all the way up the chain to Andy Jassy, the head of Amazon, and he was okay with airing it.”

This is an episode in which Erin Moriarty, the actress who plays Starlight, makes a brief appearance as a shape-shifter involved in the fictional assassination attempt on presidential candidate Robert Singer. Moriarty admitted that she felt “some fear” about how the audience might react to the season finale.

A coincidence as unsettling as it was unforeseeable. After thoroughly analyzing the situation, the creative team and the actress agreed that the episode should air as planned. In the end, the episode premiered without incident and wrapped up the season without any major repercussions.
