Final Fantasy XIV is finally coming to Xbox consoles in 2024

One of the most popular and successful MMORPGs of the last decade, Final Fantasy XIV, will finally be available on Xbox next year.

It’s been an extremely long wait, but now it’s finally official: Final Fantasy XIV is making its way to Xbox fans next year, with a version for Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X in development right now.

This was announced during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2023, an in-person event in Las Vegas where players and fans of the MMORPG gather to celebrate the game. During the traditional opening ceremony where producer and director Naoki Yoshida delivers a live keynote presentation, alongside news of the next expansion for the game, content updates, and more, Phil Spencer himself made a special appearance on stage to reveal that the game will be released in the near future for Xbox consoles.

FF XIV will arrive in its entirety to Xbox Series X/S next year, with a beta testing period beginning in April 2024. Developed in collaboration between Square Enix and Xbox, this moment has been awaited by fans for many years. This new versions of the game will be equal in content and visuals to every other version in different platforms, and will even be 4K compatible on Xbox Series X. And of course, it will have full crossplay to play with the rest of the systems, so there will be no worries about being locked in a different server than your friends.

The future of Final Fantasy XIV brings new adventures

During the event it was also revealed that, while the main story they’ve had in the game since its release over a decade ago concluded with the last expansion, Endwalker, there’s plenty more to come. A new plotline begins in the Dawntrail expansion, set to release in Summer 2024, where players will be able to explore a completely new continent of the world of Eorzea.

This expansion is the beginning of a new story, with Yoshida claiming that he wants to continue FFXIV “until I die”, or even after that. As such it’s no surprise that this new expansion will be as big (if not bigger) than everything else that’s come before it. Square Enix teased new allied races, a new thematic playable area, more dungeons and raids, and two new DPS classes that were not revealed but were teased by way of Yoshi-P’s tradition: a TMNT Mutant Mayhem t-shirt.

For newcomers to the community this might seem strange, but it’s a tradition that’s been made at every expansion reveal, where the director comes out on stage wearing a t-shirt as a hint of what the upcoming new jobs will be.

Final Fantasy XIV is currently available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. There’s also a very large free trial of the game that allows you to play through the base game and the Heavensward expansion (and they’re expanding that to include the Stormblood expansion as well).
