Final Fantasy XVI on Switch 2? Producer says: “Just Nintendo left”
The game’s producer Naoki Yoshida hints at a Switch 2 version, and creative director pledges to do his best.

Final Fantasy XVI, initially a PS5 exclusive, expanded to PC and Xbox Series X|S as part of Square Enix’s shift away from platform exclusivity. With Final Fantasy VII Remake already confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, fans are now eyeing Final Fantasy XVI’s potential arrival on Nintendo’s next-gen console.
Producer teases a Switch 2 version
During a recent Final Fantasy XIV livestream, producer Naoki Yoshida dropped a tantalizing hint:
“Just Nintendo-san left.”
His comment—shared on ResetEra—suggests Square Enix is actively exploring a Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy XVI. Creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro followed up by assuring fans he “will do everything I can” to make it happen.
Why a Switch 2 port matters
- Portable high-end RPG: Bringing Final Fantasy XVI to a hybrid console would let players experience Clive’s epic journey on the go.
- Proven strategy: Square Enix’s multiplatform approach boosted sales for PC, Xbox, and now the Switch 2 launch lineup with Final Fantasy VII Remake.
- Audience expansion: Nintendo’s user base could further elevate XVI’s community, especially among fans who missed the initial PS5 window.
Despite its demanding graphics, Switch 2’s improved hardware and techniques like dynamic resolution scaling and DLSS-like upscaling (rumored for third-party titles) could deliver a stable 30–60 fps experience.
Technical challenges and optimism
Final Fantasy XVI runs on a custom engine optimized for PS5 and high-end PCs. The Xbox Series X/S port has faced resolution and framerate trade-offs, highlighting potential hurdles for the less powerful Switch 2. However, Square Enix’s track record with Unreal Engine ports—such as Final Fantasy VII Remake—demonstrates their ability to adapt complex RPGs to varied hardware.
Maehiro’s commitment and Yoshida’s tease signal that Square Enix sees value in overcoming these challenges. If successful, a Switch 2 version could mirror the reason behind Final Fantasy VII Remake’s ongoing success on Nintendo’s platform.
For now, Final Fantasy XVI on Nintendo Switch 2 remains unofficial. Fans should watch for announcements at major events like E3 or Tokyo Game Show, where Square Enix typically unveils major multiplatform releases.
