First trailer for 'Monsters', the Netflix anime based on a classic manga by Eiichiro Oda

The story is set in the ‘One Piece’ universe, but 400 years before the adventures of Luffy and company.

A new anime based on a work by Eiichiro Oda is just around the corner, and Netflix has released the first trailer for ‘Monsters, the short story published in 1994 that is part of the “One Piece” canon. The events of this anime take place 400 years before the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and company, with a plot that puts us in the role of young Ryuma, a samurai of the Wano Country that will be very familiar to all fans of Oda’s work.

‘Monsters’ will arrive on Netflix next January 21, a work that many fans did not think they would see animated, but the streaming platform’s commitment to Eiichiro Oda is absolute. From the huge success of the live-action to the already-announced remake or the return of the main series starting with the Egghead arc, everything related to the Japanese author is now of enormous importance on Netflix. And it is not out of the question that more self-contained stories like ‘Monsters’ will be adapted in the future, and in the ‘Wanted!’ omnibus we have up to three original stories that could be adapted into anime.

Netflix brings out the full potential of Eiichiro Oda’s work

It has been an absolute success in Japan since its inception, although it was not an overnight success in the West. For a long time, other shonen manga such as ‘Naruto’ were ahead in terms of success, but little by little ‘One Piece’ made its way and managed to become an absolute mass success in this part of the planet as well. Netflix knows its potential and wants to make the most of everything Eiichiro Oda’s work has to offer.

Monsters’ is directed by South Korean director Park Sung-hoo, who was responsible for such outstanding series as ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ at MAPPA Studio, and will be working with E&H Production for his new work.
