Former Rockstar producer explains why GTA 6 is launching on consoles before PC
Rockstar’s development philosophy focuses on optimizing for console hardware first before scaling the experience to PC.
The immense anticipation surrounding GTA 6 continues to generate buzz throughout the gaming community. As its release date approaches—November 19 on current-generation consoles—one of the most recurring and painful questions for the so-called “PC Master Race” continues to echo: Why do PC users have to wait months, or even years, to enjoy Rockstar Games titles?
In a revealing interview with the YouTube channel KiwiTalkz, former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio has shed light on the real reasons behind this controversial business strategy. Contrary to the popular belief among many gamers who accuse the company of “greed” or of trying to get the public to buy the game twice, Ricchio explained that the decision stems from technical complexities in development and strict optimization of human resources within the studios.
It’s easier to expand than to shrink
The technical explanation behind the delay of the PC version lies in the software engineering methodology used by Rockstar. According to statements by the former producer, developing a video game based on the architectural limitations of a video game console (such as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S) and then porting that code to computers is an infinitely more feasible and logical process from a technical standpoint. “It’s always better to start with the constraints and then extend,” said Ricchio. “Because shrinking is a lot harder than extending. It’s way harder to make your game performant than it is to just be like ‘Oh, we’ve got extra room? Cool, we can deoptimize or make things more shiny. “.
Building a game of the scale and technical ambition of GTA 6—first by considering the infinite combinations of graphics cards, processors, and RAM in the PC world, and then trying to “compress” that experience into the closed components of a console—would be a programming nightmare that would jeopardize the stability of the general release.
Although the PC gaming market has experienced exponential growth in popularity and revenue over the past decade, Rockstar Games has decided to keep its development philosophy intact for the sixth numbered installment of its most lucrative franchise. Although the company currently has thousands of employees spread across nearly a dozen satellite studios worldwide, bringing to life one of the most ambitious and realistic open worlds in the history of digital entertainment requires a “hands-on” approach free of distractions.
