Fortnite Zero Build gets major gameplay changes as Epic experiments with safer island mechanics

Players can no longer die from falling in unranked modes, as Epic tests new mechanics that reshape combat and survival.

Update:

Following the launch of the Overwatch collaboration in Fortnite, Epic Games’ Battle Royale has undergone a series of gameplay adjustments, making the island a slightly safer place for players in Zero Build mode.

Falling will no longer kill you in Fortnite with this update

With the arrival of Update 40.40 in Fortnite, gameplay has undergone some significant changes, giving players a few more options. From now on, players will no longer take fall damage, meaning that falling from high places is no longer lethal—and no longer a sad sight in the notification area. Now, when players fall, they will hit the ground with a “Splat!” animation and be left with just 1 HP, which will also consume any remaining shield. This change, however, will only apply in unranked modes.

Meanwhile, players will start with loadouts that include a pistol and a small shield potion, as well as the option of a pocket item, all of which have unlimited uses with a cooldown. These can be Shockwave Grenades, Med Mist Grenades, or Shield Bubbles. Also, players will be able to reach the ground faster by stowing their glider at the end of the descent—in exchange, of course, for some HP. Speaking of the glider, players will be able to deploy it from certain heights.

Among the other changes, players will have infinite stamina as long as they have the Pickaxe, while eliminating other players restores their Oveshield.

For now, these changes are an experiment within Zero Build, according to the developers. How the community reacts to them will determine whether or not they are implemented in Fortnite’s future.
