Gears of War should follow the path of God of War, says ex-lead designer

Bleszinski still has a special place in his heart for Gears of War and is “happy to consult” when Microsoft calls.

Cliff Bleszinski, the man behind Gears of War, may be retired from game development, but he feels that the game he helped create “needs a little bit of [a] reboot.”

During an interview with ComicBook.com, Bleszinski was asked if he would return to Gears of War in any way, to which he responded that he would be “happy to consult” now that Microsoft owns the franchise, and that the series needs a reboot “like God of War had,” although he doesn’t give to much details about

“I’ve always said, Phil Spencer has my number, I’m happy to consult,” commented Bleszinski. “Gears will always be near and dear to my heart. Late afternoon, if I have a mimosa in me, sometimes I’ll go to YouTube and I’ll look up key cut scenes from the Gears franchise, like Dom’s death, or Dom having to put down his wife, and I read the comments.”

Bleszinski continued, “I like money. Who doesn’t? I like to eat prime rib steak and sushi sometimes, but you just want to know that your work makes [an impact]. Reading the comments on those cut scenes from Gears of War when Dom dies, people are like, ‘I had to put the controller down, my friend and I just sat there silenced and stunned.’ For people to actually get tattoos of something that you made on their bodies is the most flattering thing.

Cliff left Epic Games in October 2012 to retire but quickly returned to found Boss Key Productions in June 2014. The studio worked on LawBreakers for several years, but the game failed to find an audience. In 2018, the game and studio were shut down, and Bleszinski became a creative consultant and is now working on a comic book called Scrapper.

Gears of War is currently MIA

It’s been a long time since Cliff Bleszinski worked on Gears of War, and while the franchise continued after Xbox bought it from Epic Games in 2014, it hasn’t been the same. While The Coalition, a studio created by Microsoft and originally led by Rod Fergusson, is behind the franchise, there haven’t been many opportunities to continue the series on the same level during the Xbox 360 era.

The latest installment in the franchise, Gears Tactics, was released as a tactical spin-off for Xbox One and PC in September 2019, and it’s been five years since then. So far, Xbox hasn’t announced a new game in the series for the Xbox Series X|S, and only rumors of a Gears 6 seem to be sticking around.

While we wait for official information about the next Gears of War game, we can be sure that Netflix is already developing a live-action movie and animated series. While the announcement was made a year ago, there has been no further information about the production. Cliff Bleszinski only said: “Keep Chris Pratt away from the Gears franchise, please.”
