Gears of War creator: "keep Chris Pratt away from the Gears franchise, please"

Just moments after the announcement of the Netflix-produced Gears of War movie and adult animated series, Cliff Bleszinski, aka "Cliffy B," expressed his discomfort at a hypothetical role for Chris Pratt in either project.

Cliff Bleszinski on Chris Pratt: "keep [him] away from the Gears franchise, please, FFS"

Netflix confirmed earlier this week, taking advantage of the 16th anniversary of Gears of War, the arrival of two different adaptations of the video game: a live-action movie and an animated series for adults. The Coalition, the studio that developed the current video games in the series and is responsible for Gears of War 4, Gears 5 and Gears Tactics, is also involved in both projects.

Just a couple of hours later, Cliff Bleszinski, one of the most visible faces of Epic Games during its periods of success with the Unreal sagas and Gears of War itself, expressed his thoughts related to these projects, as to some casting choices he would like to see and even the unhappiness at a hypothetical role for Chris Pratt in these Netflix adaptations. "Oh and keep Chris Pratt away from the Gears franchise, please, FFS," the game developer and designer posted on his Twitter account.

It is not that Chris Pratt's participation has been confirmed, but we understand that this allusion to the actor refers to the various reactions when it became known that Pratt will be the voice of Mario in the animated film produced by Universal and to be released in theaters in March 2023. Pratt, son-in-law of Arnold Schwarzenegger, has been involved in various controversies and public relations problems in recent years due to his conservative views on issues such as family and religion.

Success stories and failures in video game adaptations to Netflix series

The announcement of the Gears of War series and movie for Netflix also raised suspicions among the most purist sectors and fans of video games, and no wonder. Netflix has had an inconsistent streak when it comes to adaptations of this type coming to its streaming platform. On the one hand, we have quite outstanding series such as Castlevania, The Cuphead Show! or Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

On the other hand, we have resounding failures and mediocrities such as the Resident Evil series with Lance Reddick at the helm, canceled after just one season. Whether the Gears of War adaptations end up in the first or second group is something that only time will tell.
