George R.R. Martin has shared some information about his new work, but fans aren’t happy about it
George R.R. Martin is involved in a giant wolf “de-extinction” project, which has caused anger among fans who are still waiting for The Winds of Winter.
The arrival of ’The Winds of Winter,’ the next book in George R.R. Martin’s ’A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga, remains one of the most anticipated moments for millions of fans. But the long wait has meant that any new activity from the author is seen as a distraction that pushes the long-awaited denouement further away. And now, a surprising scientific breakthrough has become the new target of criticism from the community.
The science project that distracted George R.R. Martin
This week, Colossal Biosciences announced a historic achievement: the reappearance of giant wolves (direwolves), a species that went extinct some 12,000 years ago and was popularized in Game of Thrones as a symbol of House Stark. This is the company’s first successful “de-extinction” as part of its conservation and ecological restoration mission. The first cubs, named Romulus and Remus, were born in October 2024. A third cub, named Khaleesi, was born in January 2025.
And what does George R.R. Martin have to do with all this? The author is not only an investor in Colossal Biosciences but also acts as a creative consultant and participated in the official presentation of the project. This involvement has sparked criticism from fans who feel that the author should focus solely on finishing his book.
“He is dedicated to various activities, except for writing his book,” some user wrote on a Reddit post. “Anything but writing a new damn chapter,” another user wrote. “At this point George would achieve world peace before he finishes Winds lol.” Meanwhile, other users asked, “I don’t get his role as an advisor here. What exactly is he, as a fantasy writer, advising on? Naming?” while another one had a better question: “When are the dragons coming?”
Despite the lack of news about ‘The Winds of Winter,’ the Westeros television universe remains active. The third season of ’House of the Dragon’ is already in production, and ’A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ will be released later this year.
