Game of Thrones

George R.R. Martin reveals the moment in ‘Game of Thrones’ that angered fans the most: “I threw the book into the fire”

It is one of the most violent sequences in ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’.

If Game of Thrones fans were screaming their heads off at the end of the series, George R.R. Martin’s novels were also unleashing some fury, albeit for different reasons. In ‘A Storm of Swords,’ the third book in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga, a critical event occurs that changes the future of the noble houses of Westeros forever. According to George R.R. Martin, the author of the novels, some angry fans sent him letters saying they would not read any more of his books.

The scene it refers to is the Red Wedding, a wedding that takes place in the Frey territories, though it is actually a revenge plot orchestrated by the head of that house, Walder Frey. Robb Stark broke his word, motivating the patriarch to use the ceremony to finish off the Starks. The wedding was dyed crimson and the guests ended up decorating the castle floor under the Freys' mocking gaze.

After the murder of Ned Stark, his son Robb succeeded him as head of the family. After winning several battles, the young man decided not to marry one of the Freys' daughters, breaking his vow and causing the disaster of the Red Wedding.

There were people who threatened to stop reading Martin’s books

“In 2000, when the book came out, I got tons of letters from people,” Martin explained in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. Some of the readers did not hesitate to express their anger: “‘I’m so angry with you – I’m never going to read your work again. I threw the book into the fire, then a week later I had to know what happens, so I went out and bought another copy.’ Some people were so horrified that they said they will not read any more of my work. I understand that." the author assured.

The saga ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ is not yet finished and the publication of ‘The Winds of Winter’ has been delayed for years. In recent statements, Martin has commented that it has not progressed as much as he would have liked, as in the year 2024 he has suffered episodes of stress. After charging against the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’, the also screenwriter is preparing the next spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, which will premiere next year 2025 in Max.
