Goodbye to Bungie’s independence: the creators of Halo and Destiny will join PlayStation Studios

Problems within the studio are nothing new, and its upcoming game, Marathon, has not been spared.

When Sony’s acquisition of Bungie was completed, the respective press releases implied that the studio would retain its independence. However, the situation for the creators of Halo and Destiny is more than delicate. In addition to the layoffs, there is employee unrest with management, not to mention the circumstances surrounding Marathon, their new video game. In light of all this, Sony has made its move and is preparing to integrate Bungie into PlayStation Studios.

This was revealed by Lin Tao, Sony’s chief financial officer, during a question and answer session with shareholders (via VGC). “About the governance of Bungie, at the time of acquisition we were offering a very independent environment, so that was one way of thinking,” she explained. “However, thereafter, we have gone through structural reform, as we announced last year, so this independence is getting lighter.”

According to Lin Tau, Bungie is gradually integrating into the PlayStation Studios structure, but the idea is for it to eventually become fully integrated. “In the long term, if you can see this as an ongoing process, the direction [for Bungie] is to become part of PlayStation Studios.”

And what about Marathon?

Tao has assured that canceling Marathon is not on the table at this time: “We are now fixing the problems, so we believe this launch will happen. If this launch is cancelled we’d need to do the revision of the valuation, however as of now this is not expected.”

The idea is for Marathon to be released during the current fiscal year (before March 31, 2026), although management has emphasized that this is not a firm commitment, as they have not yet provided a release date.
