Traveling to another country requires taking extra precautions in certain areas, and one of them is cell phone use. Using the Internet and data on your phone can end up giving you an unpleasant surprise, causing your bill to skyrocket if you don’t take into account the cost of using data outside your home country.
Google Maps is one of the most widely used apps when we visit places we’re not familiar with. If we’re traveling to a country where free roaming isn’t available, it’s worth keeping in mind a Google Maps feature that can be very helpful: offline maps.
How to Stay on Track When You’re Offline
Almost no one prepares for a trip by downloading the maps they’ll need in advance. However, this Google Maps feature is completely free and helps you avoid using mobile data, which could significantly increase your bill in countries where free roaming isn’t available.
The offline maps option is hidden under your profile picture. It doesn’t appear on the main screen, so you’ll have to look for it. Once you’re there, just tap “Select Your Own Map” and use your finger to adjust the area you want to download.

It’s important to download the entire area you plan to travel through. Otherwise, navigation will stop working properly once you leave the saved area. Offline mode is useful in many situations, but it doesn’t show real-time traffic conditions, doesn’t offer alternative routes based on traffic, and doesn’t support navigation for pedestrians, cyclists, or public transportation. Even so, it’s more than enough for a vacation abroad where you’ll be traveling by car.
