Grand Theft Auto VI already has a release date, but there’s bad news: it won’t arrive until 2026

It will take longer to get to Vice City.

The beaches—and the madness—of Vice City will have to wait. Rockstar Games has confirmed what many fans feared. Grand Theft Auto VI now has a new release date, and it won’t be in 2025 as expected. The game will finally be released in May 2026.

Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed

On May 26, 2026, according to a post on Rockstar Newswire, the game’s official website. This contradicts Take-Two’s previous promise to release it in fall 2025.

“Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026,” it reads on the official statement. “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve,” the statement ends.

The long wait by Rockstar Games

As previously discussed, Rockstar titles often experience delays from their initial release dates. Since Grand Theft Auto IV, several releases have experienced similar delays. Even Obbe Vermeij, the studio’s former developer, predicted that, if GTA VI were delayed, Rockstar would announce it in May 2025, just as they did with the four-month delay of GTA IV. And he was right.

For now, we can only wait for a new trailer... and be patient: there’s more than a year left to go back to Vice City on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
