GTA V developer on the size of GTA 6: “I can only imagine—it must be monstrous”

John Ricchio, producer of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption, says that GTA 6 is bound to be “monstrous” and points to a world that’s bigger, denser, and more realistic than ever.

Rockstar Games has made a name for itself, among other things, by revolutionizing open-world games with each installment of GTA and Red Dead Redemption, and, as one would expect, GTA 6 will be no exception. In fact, John Ricchio, producer of GTA V, already has a clear vision of what the world of the most anticipated release of the year—or even the decade—will be like: “Monstrous.”

“I think the fact that every single time they do a GTA, it’s ludicrously bigger than before is like something that I think about,” says Ricchio, who worked not only on GTA V, but also on Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption. “Like, I can only imagine the size of GTA 6. Like it must be monstrous. Or if not monstrous, it’s probably way more detailed.”

Ricchio’s expectations aren’t just out of thin air; they’re in line with a trend at Rockstar. As he says, “GTA V was significantly larger than GTA IV,” which in turn was also considerably larger than the first Red Dead Redemption. “Even between GTA and RDR, they were continually growing the size of the world,” he says, and while he acknowledges that this entails ever-increasing costs, it “really makes you feel like you’re in a real place.”

I’m pretty happy that I’m not on GTA 6,” he said, laughing. ”Not that it wouldn’t be cool to work with those people... but it is really difficult, and it’s a hard period of your career when you’re working that hard on something,” he admits. Despite the grueling work, seeing the enthusiasm his work generates is “magical and so rewarding.”

Everything we know about the GTA 6’s open world

GTA 6 will be set in Leonida, and primarily in Vice City—fictional versions of Florida and Miami, respectively. The setting will span the locations of Vice City, Leonida Keys (the Florida Keys), Grassrivers (the Everglades), Mount Kalaga, Port Gellhorn, and Ambrosia. This suggests a much more varied map than that of GTA V, featuring cities, swamps, coastlines, rural areas, mountains, and archipelagos. Although Rockstar has not released official figures, numerous analyses of the published materials point to a much more interactive world, with a large number of accessible buildings and activities scattered throughout the map.
