‘Gundam’ announces its first-ever live-action movie in collaboration with the production company behind ‘Dune’
The legendary mecha franchise makes the leap to Hollywood with Legendary.

The iconic universe of ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’, which began in 1979 and ended up popularizing the “mecha” genre, is finally preparing what will be the first live-action movie in its history. This was announced a few hours ago by Bandai Namco Filmworks, which has just signed an agreement with Legendary Pictures, the producers of ‘Dune’ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’, to co-produce an ambitious feature film that will do justice to the franchise.
According to the official press release issued by the Japanese company, the live-action adaptation of ‘Gundam’ is already in development under the direction of Jim Mickle, known for his work on ‘Sweet Tooth’. The project managers also released the first promotional poster for the movie.

A legacy that spans generations
The Mobile Suit Gundam series is one of the most influential franchises in the world of anime. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam changed the rules of the genre with its realistic approach to warfare and robots, moving away from traditional “good versus evil” narratives. Instead of simple heroes and villains, the “mobile suits” (mechas) are treated as weapons in a wartime conflict, creating a profound story that has resonated with fans around the world. With more than 25 anime series, 34 movies, 27 OVAs, and an extensive catalog of figures, ‘Gundam’ has achieved a global cult following. The saga is a phenomenon that generates more than $900 million annually. Until now, however, the story has only been told through animation and other formats. This live-action adaptation is just what the IP needs to bring it to an even wider audience.
