Spending a lot of time in front of a computer screen or mobile phone has become increasingly common, whether for work or play. It is not new that some technologies are attempting to mitigate the effects of visual fatigue; for example, several mobile phones have incorporated modes that reduce the emission of blue light to help the eyes and facilitate rest before going to sleep.

For its part, Gunnar has been developing eyewear specifically for gaming for years, with several models and collaborations. Earlier this year, the brand launched the Gunnar Dume, a model inspired by Tony Stark’s iconic aviator glasses in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But what do these glasses really have to offer? Here we tell you.

What’s in the box?

Gunnar Dume glasses come with a set of accessories to complete the experience. The package includes:

  • Gunnar Dume goggles with amber lenses.
  • A four-piece folding case with a faux leather exterior and a soft-touch interior.
  • One microfiber storage pouch.
  • One microfiber cleaning cloth.

Design and comfort

The Dume model is inspired by Tony Stark’s glasses in Age of Ultron, with a thick stainless steel frame that provides good support for the lenses. The material feels sturdy, with a solid and stable frame.

In terms of comfort, the glasses have a tight fit without being obtrusive. They fit slightly over the ears, but this does not interfere with the use of hearing aids, although they may leave marks after prolonged use.

One detail that caught my attention is the slight magnification on the lenses. This is not something that is obvious, but it does make reading easier. However, as this is the first time I have used lenses of this type, I initially felt a slight sensation of adjustment, similar to wearing a new pair of glasses. Fortunately, the discomfort disappeared after a few hours.

The world behind the tint

This is the first time I’ve used blue light filtering lenses, and while it took some getting used to at first, I noticed a difference after several hours of use. I tried the Gunnar Dume for both a workday and a gaming session, and in both cases, they helped reduce eye strain.

However, the amber tint slightly alters colors, which can be a problem if you need color accuracy, such as in graphic design or photography. For casual use, this is not a drawback, but if you are very color sensitive, you may notice it.

Price and options

The Gunnar Dume is priced at $89, including the aforementioned accessories. On the official site, you can choose them in their standard version, with a custom prescription, or even with sunglasses.

Verdict

The Gunnar Dume glasses combine stylish design with functional eye protection, highlighted by a high-quality metal frame that makes them look like premium sunglasses. Their Tony Stark-inspired aviator styling and folding case add a practical and sophisticated touch. However, the amber tint may not be ideal for those who require color accuracy, and the slight magnification may cause discomfort for some wearers. Although the headset fits comfortably, initial fitting may vary.
