Harry Potter HBO series loses its Ginny Weasley actress after season 1 “due to unforeseen circumstances”

The ‘Harry Potter’ series on HBO is set to premiere later this year, and even though its release is still a ways off, one of its first recastings is already on the horizon—though, as far as we know, it’s for a minor role.

Farewell to one of the Weasleys After Season 1

HBO has announced that Gracie Cochrane, who will play Ginny Weasley in the first season of the Harry Potter series, will not be returning for subsequent seasons. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series after Season 1,” Cochrane and her family said in a joint statement. “Her time as part of the ‘Harry Potter’ world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”

It’s worth noting that Ginny Weasley has a minor role in the first book, making only a brief appearance in ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,’ where she stands alongside her mother at King’s Cross Station to see her brothers off. Although Ginny’s role begins to grow starting with the second book, ‘The Chamber of Secrets,’ where she plays a more significant part after being tricked into opening one of the secret chambers inside Hogwarts. That said, it’s worth noting that the series will give us a deeper look than the movies and even the books did, so Ginny’s role might have taken on greater significance earlier on.

Given the amount of time HBO will be taking between seasons, the production team behind the series has time to restart the casting process for this role. For now, filming for the first season has wrapped, and the second season is currently in pre-production.
