Helldivers 2’s review bombing incident has inspired the design of an in-game cape to celebrate
To celebrate the player community’s victory after PSN Network accounts that would have seen the title removed from over 170 countries, a new cape is coming to Helldivers 2
Even though it’s been turned back, Sony’s controversial decision to make it mandatory to link a PSN account to enjoy Helldivers 2 on Steam will be felt by players forever. Everyone who’s enjoyed the Arrowhead Studios game has it clear that the team displays a great sense of humor and integrity, and that is why they are going to carry out a fun initiative to commemorate this controversy that, luckily, will not be soon forgotten by anyone in the industry.
A community design convinces Arrowhead
Johan Pilestedt, CEO of the Swedish studio, has shared a fun community design for a cape that reflects the graph of negative reviews on Steam for Helldivers 2, where the red stripes represent the decrease in the game’s ratings. “The accidental cape design is pretty cool. From a community member,” he said onTwitter/X.
A fan responded to Pilestedt, asking him to please make it happen, and his response was immediate. “The team is talking about a good name for it right now”, but did not specify when or how players could get their hands on it.”
However, it’s almost certain that it won’t be a paid piece of content, as it would be an even more controversial decision to charge the community for a cape that commemorates a really difficult time they have had, no matter how much fun they now have with it. Meanwhile, the community is already thinking about descriptions for the cape, some as fun as “a commemoration of the liberation of more than 100 countries and the restoration of democracy and autonomy for PC players.”
PlayStation’s subsequent decision to force Steam players to link their Valve platform account with a PSN account really ended badly for them. Players united to flood the game’s page with negative reviews, in addition to that of Helldivers, the original game. After a few days of internal crisis, the publisher decided to back down after the tremendous response from the PC community.
