Sony backtracks on Helldivers 2 and responds to the controversy that sunk it on Steam

One bad decision can cause a chain reaction. When Arrowhead Game Studios announced a few days ago that PC gamers would have to link their Steam accounts to their PlayStation Network accounts to play Helldivers 2, the reaction was swift: review bombing and the game plunged into the mire. The visceral reaction from gamers was a strong warning that Sony had to heed. So much so that PlayStation has officially confirmed that it will not be going ahead with its plans. The truth is that this move would have led to the withdrawal of the title in countries where, for one reason or another, they do not have PSN or cannot set up the operation (more than 175, including Japan), an unexpected consequence that would have brought with it the thinning of the pool of users.

“Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward,” PlayStation wrote on its Twitter / X account. “We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

Helldivers 2 on Steam: the reviews are plummeting

Despite good reviews, despite the good reception it has had among gamers, Helldivers 2 has plummeted in reviews in just a few days. At the time of writing, the latest reviews show a “mostly negative” opinion. Meanwhile, the overall reviews have also been affected, as they are now listed as “mixed”. Despite this, the game has shown a steady decline in players over the months that the game has been on the market. Although these numbers are far from where they started, they are still strong and show the strength of the community.
