Kojima Productions

Hideo Kojima just announced the first PlayStation 6 game and no one noticed

The creator of Metal Gear Solid is coming back to the Action Espionage genre with Physint, a new series for Sony that will arrive with the “next-generation”.

Kojima

Physint. Write down that name: Physint. It was the “one more thing” of the first State of Play of 2024, the icing on the cake with which Sony crowned an already great event. It’s Hideo Kojima’s next game and everything indicates that it will basically be “PlayStation 6′s Metal Gear Solid”. At 60 years old, the developer came out on stage to confirm that he will return to the espionage and action genre with a new saga that will take digital entertainment “to the next level.”

“PHYSINT (working title)” will be the third, new original IP since the establishment of KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. It is a completely new “Action Espionage” for the next-generation. It will be created using cutting-edge technology and the best talents from around the world, both from film and video games. Of course this is an interactive “game”, but the look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc... are all at the next level of “Digital Entertainment” that could be called a “movie””.

When will PlayStation 6 come out?

The first PlayStation was launched in 1994. Its successor, PlayStation 2, arrived in 2000. PS3 took over in 2006 and PS4 did the same in 2013. The current one, PlayStation 5, landed in stores in 2020. Or in other words mode, no Sony console has gone for more than seven years without a successor and we have been in this generation for four years now. To think that we will not have a new platform before 2030 is a utopia. The logical thing would be to expect PlayStation 6 for 2027.

Now take a look at Hideo Kojima’s development times. Between the first Metal Gear Solid (1998) and its sequel, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001), three years passed. The same as between that and the third delivery, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004). Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008) would take four and we had to wait another seven to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015), although with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010) in between.

Then would come the breakup with Konami and Death Stranding (2019). By the time its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, arrives (2025), six years will have passed and the next thing on the calendar will be OD, an exclusive Xbox game announced in 2022 and currently without a date. It is not nonsense to think of Physint as a game for 2030 and by then it has become clear that we will already be playing on PS6.

We are not yet aware of what Physint entails. It is Kojima’s return to the genre that elevated him, without Konami or Snake involved, but again from the hand of Sony. It is a project that he himself considers somewhere between cinema and video games. A work that he describes using terms such as “cutting edge technology”, “next generation” and “next level of digital entertainment”. And yes, it’s also the first game announced for PlayStation 6, which means that in 2030, when the designer is already 66 years old, we will still be enjoying his... madness? genius? both?
