‘Home Alone’ knocked off the top-grossing Christmas movie list

Chris Columbus' classic was surpassed almost 30 years later.

When asked to name a Christmas classic in the world of cinema, most people would probably say ‘Home Alone’, the movie starring Macaulay Culkin in the unforgettable role of Kevin McCallister. A movie that has stood the test of time despite being over three decades old, but in terms of box office, there is another Christmas movie that surpasses it.

It’s ‘The Grinch’ and its 2018 animated film, an American classic born in 1957 with the popular book ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ by the writer and cartoonist known as Dr. Seuss, from whose imagination came characters like the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax and Horton the Elephant, among many others. The animated film of the grumpy character has grossed a total of 540 million dollars, surpassing ‘Home Alone’, which reached 476 million dollars at the box office, but of course, with almost 30 years difference between one and the other, it is remarkable the merit and impact that the work of director Chris Columbus had in its time.

Christmas classics that never fail

If ‘Home Alone’ and its first two installments are always on everyone’s lips Christmas after Christmas, ‘The Grinch’ isn’t far behind, whether in the 1966 animated classic, the 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey, or the aforementioned 2018 animated film.

The difference between the two films and their budgets is also noteworthy, with Home Alone having a budget of $18 million to The Grinch’s $75 million. What other movies are at the top of the Christmas box office?

  1. ‘The Grinch’ (2018) with $540 million.
  2. ‘Home Alone’ (1990) with $476 million.
  3. ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ (2007) with $365 million.
  4. ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ (1992) with $359 million.
  5. ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ (2000) with $346 million.
