House of the Dragon premieres in June, and this is the context for Season 2

HBO will set the bloody tone of the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen war of succession between members of the same dynasty.

There is still no concrete date for the premiere of the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’, the first spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’, but between some and others they are refining it more and more. Matt Smith, the actor who plays Daemon Targaryen, let slip that it would be in August. However, actors do not always get it right, no matter how much they are involved in the productions. More confidence comes from the words of HBO officials: Casey Bloys, head of the network, said “early summer” and David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, pointed to “next quarter” as the premiere window. J.B. Perrette, who runs the streaming business, confirmed it would be in June.

House of the Dragon takes place centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, when the Targaryen kings were still rulers of the Seven Kingdoms. Within the chronology, the spin-off story takes place years after the death of Jaeharys I the Conciliator, when his son Viserys Targaryen assumed his duties and sat on the Iron Throne. Unlike his fierce brother Daemon, the new king preferred diplomacy and peace to arms, and he did so on Balerion the Black Terror, one of the surviving dragons of a bygone era, as it was the mount of Aegon the Conqueror, the dynasty’s first monarch.

Season Two, A World at War

Contrary to the unwritten rule that a man is always preferable to a woman, King Viserys chose his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen as his successor. But the old king remarried Alicent Hightower, paradoxically one of Rhaenyra’s best friends... until that moment, of course. Then they became bitter enemies. Intractable treachery began to brew at court as the Queen Consort’s supporters plotted to have the eldest son of the marriage, Aegon II Targaryen, declared heir. They were unsuccessful, but after Viserys’ death, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Criston Cole supported Alicent and helped secure Aegon’s appointment.

At the end of the first season, Aegon is crowned king and Rhaenyra’s son is killed by the green side. Furious, the queen - also crowned by her followers - prepares for war. This season 2 will tell the story of the conflict called The Dance of the Dragons, a very graphic name that reflects a family battle, that of the House of the Dragon, who used these reptiles to murder and burn their enemies. It is a conflict of the Targaryen succession that rises to the heavens to reach a brutal scale: dragon against dragon, family against family, a succession of battles in blood and fire that destroy and impoverish the kingdoms. Greens against blacks, a mixture of colors that results in the red of the juice.

The first season of “House of the Dragon” is already available on Max. Its creators are preparing another spin-off based on the same book, “Blood and Fire” by George R.R. Martin, which will be a prequel that will tell the story of Aegon the Conqueror, the Targaryen who subdued the Seven Kingdoms as monarch.
