House of the Dragon’: These are the three references to Daenerys Targaryen in the ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off

The Mother of Dragons was born more than 150 years after the events of this prequel.

The story of ‘House of the Dragon’ takes place nearly two centuries before the fall of the Targaryens and the brilliant rise of the last - or so she believed - of the dynasty. Daenerys Targaryen, daughter of the mad king Aerys II Targaryen, mother of dragons, and heir to the Iron Throne, spent her childhood and youth listening to the whispers and longings of her brother Viserys, who would do anything to seize power. In the end, it was she who took up arms and fought for what she considered her quasi-divine right. Considering that her line was almost completely wiped out (not to mention the true nature of Jon Snow), the prequel series makes several references to the character of the Khaleesi.

The first reference occurs at the beginning of the series, almost at the beginning of the first episode. King Jaehaerys Targaryen’s health begins to fail after 60 years of reign. The personal tragedy of his sons causes the old king to call a council to choose his successor, who is eventually his grandson Viserys. Through a text message, the show places the viewer in the chronology in this way: “It is now the ninth year of King Viserys I Targaryen’s reign. 172 years before the death of the Mad King, Aerys, and the birth of his daughter, Princess Daenerys Targaryen.”

The second reference is not directly to Daenerys, but to her unborn “children”. In the second episode of season 2, Rhaena Targaryen and Rhaenyra’s offspring are sent to safety as the situation has become too dangerous. At that moment, some dragon eggs are seen that will only hatch at the time of the Mother of Dragons. They will hatch into Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion at a time when dragons have already disappeared from the Seven Kingdoms.

The final clue is a vision of Dhaemon Targaryen, who sees the image of Daenerys Targaryen on her back, just after surviving the blazing fire, as the eggs hatch against all odds.

The first two seasons of ‘House of the Dragon’ are already available on Max. The third season has already been announced, although it will not be released in 2025, the date reserved for ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.
