‘House of the Dragon’: Vermax, Vhagar, Balerion and every dragon in the HBO series
There are many dragons in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’, and even more are coming. Here’s who they are.
‘House of the Dragon’ has finally started its second season. The series inspired by one of the most defining moments of the Targaryen dynasty, narrated in the book ‘Fire and Blood’ by George R.R. Martin, introduces us to a large number of dragons that will participate, in one way or another, in the civil war that Westeros suffered after the death of Viserys I Targaryen known as the Dance of Dragons.
Below you’ll find all of the dragons that have appeared and will appear in ‘House of the Dragon’.
Caraxes
Known as the Blood Wyrm, he is the dragon belonging to prince Aemon Targaryen, third son of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and father of Rhaenys Targaryen. Caraxes is a large, thin red dragon that has a terrifying appearance and has been specially trained for battle. A piece that will be fundamental in the Dance of the Dragons.
Sunfyre
The dragon of Aegon II Targaryen. With golden scales and pale pink wings, shining like gold when its scales shine in the sun. With a golden blaze, it is a splendid but young dragon.
Vhagar
The oldest living dragon we see in the series. Almost two centuries old, it was part of the War of Conquest and was linked to the queen Visenya Targaryen, sister and wife of Aegon the Conqueror, founder of the Targaryen dynasty that reigned in Westeros. Vhagar has been ridden by Baelon Targaryen, Lady Laena Velaryon, and, at this time, prince Aemond Targaryen. A female dragon of gigantic size, approaching the dimensions reached by Balerion, the largest dragon in the history of Westeros.
Seasmoke
It was the dragon of Laenor Velaryon and, later, of Addam Velaryon. A dragon with pale silver-gray scales that we could see in action in the first season of ‘House of the Dragon’ on the Stone Steps and that in the second episode of season 2 could be seen very subtly.
Balerion
The Black Terror, the greatest dragon that has crossed Westeros. Ridden by Kings Aegon I and Maegor I; Princess Aerea Targaryen and Viserys Targaryen while he was prince. He is no longer alive in ‘House of the Dragon’, but his imposing skull appears in the Red Keep just as it did in ‘Game of Thrones’.
Silverwing
The dragon of queen Alysanne Targaryen, sister and wife of King Jaehaerys I. A silver dragon considered docile and friendly to strangers who will have her importance in ‘House of the Dragon’.
Meleys
Known as the Red Queen, ridden by Alyssa Targaryen and later Rhaenys Targaryen. With scarlet scales and pink wings, it was no bigger than Vhagar but might have been able to stand up to her. We were able to see Meleys in all its splendor at the end of the first season of ‘House of the Dragon’, when Rhaenys interrupts the coronation of Aegon II, in a moment that could have completely changed the history of the Targaryen dynasty.
Vermithor
It was the dragon of king Jaehaerys I Targaryen. A bronze and cinnamon-colored dragon, of great power and almost a century old.
Arrax
It was prince Lucerys Velaryon’s dragon, the first to die in ‘House of the Dragon’, a preview of what is to come in the civil war that was the beginning of the end of the Targaryen dynasty. Arrax grew enormously year after year, pearly white with a crest and golden eyes, but at only 13 years of age he was no match for a Vhagar with whom he looked like a simple lizard in comparison. Killed on Shipwreck Bay along with his rider.
Tessarion
Known as The Blue Queen, she is the dragon of Daeron Targaryen, a character mentioned for the first time in the second chapter of season 2. With blue scales, dark wings, and other parts of enormous brightness. It has an adequate size for fighting but it is a very young dragon.
Syrax
It is the dragon of Rhaenyra Targaryen. With yellow scales, it is huge but not fearsome in the same way as Caraxes.
Sheepstealer
A wild dragon that lives on Dragonmont. Mud brown in color, it has a taste for lamb meat, hence its name.
Grey Ghost
Another of the wild dragons that lived in the Dragonmont volcano was pale grayish in color. He was never claimed by any man.
Cannibal
One more of the three wild dragons. Cannibal was the most dangerous of all, having a weakness for the meat of dead dragons, newborns, and their eggs. Black as coal with intimidating green eyes, he lived in Dragonmont.
Vermax
It is the dragon of Jacaerys Velaryon. A young specimen that was given to him in his crib and since then has grown enormously year after year. With him, he flew north to establish alliances as important as that of Winterfell.
Moondancer
The dragon of Baela Targaryen. Slender and pale green in color, with a pearl tone in various parts of its body. A dragon of enormous speed and agility, but very small in size due to its birth shortly before the Dance of the Dragons.
Dreamfyre
The dragon of Rhaena Targaryen, daughter of King Aenys I Targaryen, the second to sit on the Iron Throne. He is later ridden by Helaena Targaryen. Pale blue in color and with silver markings.
