‘House of the Dragon’: Who’s Cregan Stark, the new character in Season 2’s trailer

The Lord of Winterfell takes the side of Princess Rhaenyra in the Dance of Dragons, but just who is Cregan Stark?

La Casa del Dragón, Cregan Stark

The second season of ‘House of the Dragon’ plunges headlong into a fratricidal war. One house, two sides, two monarchs, and many dragons and soldiers. By land, sea, and air, arrow here, fire there, blades everywhere. Blacks and Greens carry their respective banners and move both on the battlefield and the board. They try to rally their allies to win the battle that will determine who reigns over the Seven Kingdoms, Aegon II Targaryen or Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Among the noble houses involved is the Starks, the same family that also rules Winterfell at the time of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, but who is Cregan Stark, one of the characters that appears in the latest trailer?

Lord of Winterfell and Guardian of the North since the age of thirteen, his uncle Bernard Stark acted as regent until he came of age, although it was difficult for him to give up power. So much so that Cregan rebelled and took command by force. At the time of The Dance of Dragons, Rhaenyra’s son, Prince Jacaerys Targaryen, flew on the back of the dragon Vermax to the North, where he met with Lord Stark to seek his support in the war. He brandished Ice, the same sword that the rest of the Stark lords used to decapitate those condemned to death.

In the novel ‘Fire and Blood’ by George R.R. Martin, the same one on which ‘House of the Dragon’ is based, the story is told from the perspectives of different characters, each with their unique points of view. Therefore, there are several versions of the same historical event. On the contrary, the series has chosen to use a different narrative structure and create its own unitary version. Be that as it may, the meeting between Cregan and Jacaerys concluded in agreement: They signed the Pact of Ice and Fire, by which it was established that Rickon Stark, son of Cregan, would marry the prince’s first-born daughter.

The war itself will be narrated in the second season, so we won’t go into detail to avoid spoilers. Suffice it to say that Lord Stark played his part in a battle full of death and destruction, which will leave the Seven Kingdoms engulfed in an epidemic of visceral war. What can be said is that for a time he served as Hand of the King, the monarch’s main advisor, and executive hand on numerous occasions.

‘House of the Dragon’ premieres June 16 on Max. Other spin-offs of ‘Game of Thrones’ are also on the way
