How many parts will Wicked have? Here's what will happen in the second part of the movie
The movie cleverly follows an important detail of the original Broadway play in depicting the journey of Elphaba and Glinda.
The beloved Broadway musical Wicked opened in theaters this weekend and, to no one’s surprise, became a huge box office hit. What came as a surprise to those not in the know, however, was that this Jon M. Chu-directed movie is only the first of two parts. But why was this decision made and what will the next installment contain? Here we tell you.
Why was Wicked split into two parts?
It is important to mention that the original Wicked musical is divided into two acts, which is reflected in the movie. However, it is also worth mentioning that this division allowed the creative team to offer much more to make a movie that had enough for its audience.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, the process that led to the film being split into two parts was revealed. Winnie Holzman, the original screenwriter of the work, and Stephen Schwartz, the lyricist and composer, shared the reasons behind the decision they made with director Jon Chu.
“We were very, very judicious, and we would have long conversations — Steven and I together with Jon Chu, all of us with Marc Platt as well — just really talking out and weighing the two options”, commented Holzman. “We just had too much story for one movie. We wanted the fun, and the whole artistic fulfillment of being able to make these movies was to be able to explore our story and our characters with a little bit more depth; to take a little bit more time. As we’re doing that, it’s adding up. And nobody wanted to cut any songs — in fact, we wanted to add songs.” For his part, Schwartz said “We could always wind up going back to the idea of one movie, which is where we began, and just putting in cuts and compressing things in order to not be a one six-hour movie. But it made it less scary of a choice to know that if it didn’t work, we could always retreat.”
What will happen in Wicked: Part Two?
While the first movie covers Elphaba and Glinda’s early days at Shiz University and the events leading up to the climax of Defying Gravity, the second part will deal with the aftermath of Elphaba’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West. Talking about all that would be spoiling the second part... well, if you haven’t seen the Broadway production.
Wicked: Part 1 is already in theaters and Part 2 will be released on November 21, 2025.
