How to change your Minecraft username? PC, PlayStation, Xbox, mobile…

When you’re playing Minecraft online, whether its with your friends or on a public server, the first thing you’ll notice is that everyone has their username on top of their head. And that includes you. So if you no don’t like yours for whatever reason, be it that it’s no longer to your liking or it’s outdated, or even if you had no idea that’s what it was, there’s way to change it to something more appropriate for you.

The first thing you have to consider is that there are two different versions of the Minecraft, and all of the platforms play on one or the other:

  • Bedrock is the version on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, IOS, and Android. PC players can also choose to play this one, as this is the one that allows for crossplay.
  • Minecraft: Java Edition is available as an option for PC players, but is also the only way to play the game on Mac or Linux. There is no crossplay in it, but coop is still available.

How to change your username on Minecraft: Java Edition

  • Go to the official Minecraft website, and log into your Microsoft account
  • Once logged in, click on the “My Games” tab
  • Click on the “Minecraft: Java Edition” icon
  • Select the “Profile Name” option
  • Enter your new username, and click on “Change Profile Name”

You can change your username as many times as you want for free, but remember that you can only do so once every 30 days.

How to change your username on Bedrock (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC, mobile)

Minecraft Bedrock is unique in that, since it allows for online crossplay, it asks you to link your game to a Microsoft account to have access to online multiplayer. In some instances, you can still play offline (like on consoles and mobile devices), and in those cases, you only need to change your name in the game’s settings. For PlayStation, your name will always match your PSN name, while on Nintendo Switch it’ll match your console’s profile name.

If you do have a Microsoft account linked to your game, then just follow the next steps to change your username:

  • Go to the Xbox website, and log into the Microsoft account linked to your game
  • Once logged in, open your Xbox Profile
  • Click the “Customize” option under your name
  • Click the pencil icon next to your username
  • Enter the name you want to change it to, and click on “Check Availability”
  • If no one else has that name, it’ll change automatically. Otherwise it’ll prompt you to enter a different one.

Remember that the first time you change your Xbox/Microsoft username, it’ll be free. But every time after that, you’ll be charged $9.99 to change it again.
