How to get a refund in Fortnite if you made purchases by mistake in its store
We’ll tell you how to request a refund if you accidentally made purchases in Fortnite due to the intentionally malicious design of its store.
The first refunds to players due to purchases made in error in the Fortnite store began to arrive in the second week of December 2024. This is the first round of payments related to an out-of-court settlement in which Epic Games committed before the FTC to return the money to all players affected by the design of the Fortnite store, which induced instant purchases while making refunds difficult.
How to ask for a refund in Fortnite, if you are one of those affected by mistaken purchases
Since December 9 last year, the FTC - the Federal Trade Commission of the United States - began to compensate all those affected by mistaken purchases in the Fortnite store. If we are one of those affected, we can apply for a refund as follows:
- Go to this section of the FTC website.
- Click on the “Request Refund” button.
- Follow all the steps and fill out the form with the information requested by the platform. We will need to provide information such as the ID of our Epic Games account.
In this way, it is possible to request a refund of money that can partially or fully cover all purchases made in error within Fortnite due to the design of its store several years ago, which was considered detrimental for its deliberate intention to facilitate purchases with a simple touch of a button, but instead, for refunds required additional steps that were not entirely clear.
According to the FTC, more than half a million players have already been compensated with an average payment of $114. This payment can be requested in two different ways: payment via PayPal account - for which we need to have an account, of course - or by bank check. The payment should arrive within thirty days if we request it via PayPal, and this reimbursement can take up to ninety days if it is by bank check. Remember that there is a deadline for submitting the refund request: January 10, 2025.
What are the requirements for requesting a refund for Fortnite in-game purchases made in error?
An important aspect of requesting a refund for Fortnite inadvertent purchases is that there are specific time requirements, taking into account when the inadvertent purchases occurred. Therefore, a refund can only be requested by those users who:
- Made inadvertent purchases on Fortnite between January 2017 and September 2022.
- Have a minor in their care who charged their credit card on Fortnite without their knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.
- Their account was frozen between January 2017 and September 2022, after they filed a complaint with the bank about the erroneous credit card charges.
By doing this, the FTC is ensuring that the restitution money goes to all those affected who can prove that they actually suffered from this abusive policy on the part of Epic Games. This also serves as a deterrent to any rogue who might want to “participate” in these refunds without being one of those affected.
