‘Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’ director reveals how the new adventure was created
The creative director of the upcoming ' Indiana Jones’ game reveals how the collaboration between MachineGames and Lucasfilm.
The most adventurous archaeologist is back in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, with developer MachineGames, the studio behind Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and many more, behind the upcoming title. It is an original story set one year after ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, although we are not dealing with a direct sequel. As previously said, the creative idea behind the project came from Todd Howard, the director of games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, but how has the collaboration between Bethesda and Lucasfilm Games worked? Creative director Axel Torvenius explained it this way in an interview with MeriStation.
“It all started with Todd Howard. He had a vision for a long time of an idea for the Indiana Jones game that I wanted to make. He had already thought about the central premise of the narrative, and presented it to Lucasfilm Games and they were enthusiastic. They told him they thought it was cool, so Howard approached MachineGames and told us that the opportunity had arisen and asked if we were interested in doing it. He thought MachineGames would be a perfect fit.”
According to Torvenius, it was Todd Howard himself who contacted Lucasfilm to explore the possibility of developing the project. Once they took over development, they expanded the idea of the story and they adapted it to the video game that they have finally built.
Creative freedom to design the game they wanted to make
“We have had a lot of freedom,” said the developer. “We’ve made the game they wanted to make, but we’ve worked very closely with Lucasfilm Games throughout the process and it’s been great. Have invaluable knowledge of the character and intellectual property”. Torvenius has assured that they have held weekly meetings in all departments, so communication with Lucasfilm has been continuous and fluid. “They’ve been a big help,” even advising them to change some things when it wasn’t feeling too Indiana Jones. “They gave us access to the archives, so we’ve been able to see conceptual art that I’m sure no one else has seen.”
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle releases on December 9 (December 6 in early access) for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Game Pass, and PC. The PS5 version will come out in the spring of 2025.
