To talk about James Wan is to talk about one of the masters of modern horror cinema. Because ‘Insidious’, ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘Saw’ are some of the most acclaimed sagas we have seen in the genre in the last ten years, and they all bear his stamp. He is also the director of works like ‘Malignant’ and a classic like ‘Dead Silence’, among others.

A few months ago we told you that the Australian filmmaker was thinking about making a movie based on ‘Call of Cthulhu’, one of the most popular stories by the legendary H. P. Lovecraft. That, and he was especially excited about doing the project. Well, it’s happening, because as we can read in Deadline, the ‘Call of Cthulhu’ movie is real.

What is ‘Call of Cthulhu’ about?

Call of Cthulhu’ is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft in 1926 and published in 1928. It is one of the most popular works of the Providence writer and is based on the death of a professor who was working on an investigation into a cult that, roughly speaking, worshipped Cthulhu, the most famous creature of Lovecraft’s mythology. A cosmic being that we have often imagined in the form of a giant cephalopod, coming from another world and theoretically resting in the depths of R’lyeh, the sunken city.

This is not the first time that ‘Call of Cthulhu’ has been brought to the big screen. Without going into details, there is already a movie of the same name, directed by Andrew Leman in 2005. And if you are a fan of video games, you are probably familiar with Cyanide Studio’s horror adventure in which we travel to Blackwater, an island that could very well be Innsmouth.
