Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is the sci-fi bombshell and PS5 exclusive from the creators of The Last of Us
Naughty Dog has been working since 2020 on this new IP, a space-themed game that has already shown its first trailer.
In the midst of the HBO series whirlwind, Naughty Dog has been focusing on The Last of Us. First with the remake of the first installment, and then with the remastering of the sequel. Neil Druckmann, president of the studio and director of several of the company’s hits, took the stage at The Game Awards to show off an image of The Last of Us online multiplayer project, which was ultimately canceled. Now he’s back on stage to reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a new space-themed IP that’s been in development since 2020.
First details on Heretic: The Heretic Prophet, the blockbuster Naughty Dog is preparing for PS5.
Intergalactic stars Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who finds herself trapped on Sempiria, a distant planet that has been cut off from the outside universe for hundreds of years. Jordan will have to use all of her skills to do what others have failed to do: get out alive. “Beyond that, we’re keeping everything about the story under wraps – at least for now,” they announced on their website. “What we can tell you is that this game lives up to the Naughty Dog tradition of creating an emotional, character-driven epic journey. Our narrative goals are rivaled only by our gameplay ambitions. This will be the deepest gameplay in Naughty Dog’s history.”
Jordan will be played by Tati Gabrielle, who leads “a stellar cast.” In addition, the soundtrack will be composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
Starting over: From The Last of Us Online’s farewell to new projects
Rumors and leaks pointed to a debacle. Bungie was said to have expressed concerns about the business model for The Last of Us Online, a project that was originally conceived as part of The Last of Us Part 2, but which was separated from that project when it became its own entity. Eventually, Naughty Dog itself announced the decision to discontinue development. In a statement posted on their official website, they noted how difficult it was to cancel the game:
“In ramping up to full production, the massive scope of our ambition became clear. To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage,” they said.
