Interstellar got rid of a controversial theory thanks to a Nobel Physics Award winner

Nolan bump heads with a Nobel Physics Award winner who questioned a theory that the director wanted to show on screen.

Christopher Nolan has always been known for offering a vision as a director different from what is established. For ‘Interstellar’, it would be no less, as the filmmaker tried to impose a theory that put his scientific team on a war path, led by a Nobel Prize winner in Physics. However, it was the team lead’s insistence that made Nolan discard a controversial idea in scientific terms.

The idea that Nolan discarded on the advice of a Nobel Prize in Physics

Among the team advising Nolan was Kip Thorne, an American theoretical physicist who years after working on ‘Interstellar’ won the Nobel Prize in Physics in the 2017 edition. In his long career there is a multitude of research related to the cosmology of black holes, wormholes and travel through time. This encouraged the director to enlist his services.

As reported by Collider, Nolan was particularly obsessed with faster-than-light travel. Current theory tells us that it is impossible, and was one of the causes of friction between him and Thorne. The scientist made it clear that under his supervision no laws of physics would be violated, while Nolan tried to apply fiction in service of the plot. So much so that the filmmaker made it clear that this idea was part of one of the “non-negotiable” issues for the conception of the film.

However, time managed to prove Thorne right. His insistence made Nolan change his objective in one of the scientist’s star areas: wormholes. In this way, some of the most legendary scenes of the film were born. It is probably one of the few times in which Nolan has lost a battle within his creative processes, and in this case something more special by doing so in front of a person outside of cinema.
