Invincible’s Steven Yeun has been confirmed as a powerful new arrival to the MCU in ‘Thunderbolts’
Steven Yeun will be joining the MCU in the upcoming Thunderbolts as one of the most powerful Marvel characters ever.
One of the Marvel productions most affected by the strike of Hollywood actors and scriptwriters has been ‘Thunderbolts’, which was even paused indefinitely. Fortunately for everyone, the strike came to an end, and with it, comes a return to work for Marvel Studios, and this film is one of those that is back on the list for Kevin Feige and company. Although many of the members of this group of antiheroes already have an actor behind them, it remained to be known who would be in charge of giving life to the supposed antagonist of the film, with some strong rumors that suggested the arrival of the almighty Sentry.
While the rumors pointed at Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Invincible) being casted for the role of the incredibly powerful Superman-parallel by Marvel, it was Robert Kirkman, creator of both of the series from which he is better known, who accidentally confirmed it.
“My good friend Steven Yeun is playing the Sentry in a movie,” said Kirkman during a livestream with comic artist David Finch. “He called me, he went in for a costume fitting. I hope I’m not – I don’t think this is a spoiler or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don’t know, maybe, we’ll see. I don’t care, I don’t work for Marvel, what are they going to do to me?”
Kirkman continued: “He said, ‘I just came back for a costume fitting for the Sentry. I guess I only do superheroes that are yellow and blue.’ He was at the costume fitting and was like ‘Aw crap, I forgot Invincible was yellow and blue’.”
Steven Yeun, despite his appearance, is already 39 years old, boasting a long career in very popular films and series. Obviously, his most recognized role is that of Glenn in ‘The Walking Dead’, with a tragic ending. In the big screen, he has participated in films such as ‘Nope’, the famous film by Jordan Peele, and with the role of Sentry, he will debut in the MCU.
Who are the Thunderbolts?
The Thunderbolts would be the equivalent of the Suicide Squad of DC, a group made up of villains who are called upon in extreme situations. Without having fixed members throughout history in the comics, some of them have been Yelena (Florence Pugh in ‘Black Widow’), Winter Soldier, Deadpool, Venom, Luke Cage or the different Ghost Riders there have been. However, only the first is confirmed to appear in the film.
On the other hand, Sentry is one of the most powerful characters in Marvel history, with strength comparable to that of Superman ‚being in fact responsible for Carnage’s death after taking it to space. That said, there is no doubt that Yeun will have to eat plenty of protein and spend a lot of time training.
