iPhone 15 is made from Titanium Grade 5, a material used by NASA in rockets

Yesterday morning left us with one of the most anticipated moments of 2023, the presentation of the iPhone 15 and all its models. Apple won over many people for various reasons, such as the price of the phones, the release date (September 22), and a commitment to video games, but there were aspects that perhaps went somewhat unnoticed, such as the fact that the body of the Pro models is made of Titanium Grade 5.

Titanium Grade 5, also known as Ti-6AI-4V, is a material that NASA itself uses in its missions because it offers all kinds of lightweight, durable, and high-temperature compatible solutions, so parts of its rockets, space ships, and other types of structures use this metal alloy, as Apple points out in the device’s one-pager.

What is Titanium?

Titanium is a transition metal with a gray color, low density, and high resistance to corrosion by water and chlorine. There are different grades of titanium: 1 through 4 are pure titanium, while the others are alloys. In the case of iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the body of the phone is made of Titanium Grade 5, one of the most commonly used due to its combination of high strength and high-temperature resistance.
