It is one of the best episodes of ‘Game of Thrones’ and it was written by George R.R. Martin himself: “It is my favorite”
The Battle of Blackwater tells the story of Stannis’ failed attempt to seize the Iron Throne.

George R.R.Martin, author of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, has a favorite episode of ‘Game of Thrones’... the ones he wrote himself. The writer revealed this in a post on his official blog published in 2023. In the post, titled ‘Perfect Episodes’, Martin had this to say: “I have never claimed to be perfect… but if the good folks at VANITY FAIR want to say so, who I am to argue?” he commented after this media outlet chose ‘Blackwater’ as one of those episodes.
“Of course, they are not actually saying I am perfect. They are talking about ‘Blackwater,’ one of the episodes I wrote for GAME OF THRONES. (I scripted four. And yes, ‘Blackwater’ is my own favorite of those, although I thought “The Lion and the Rose” turned out very well too, and I have a soft spot for that one)“.

Stannis attacks King’s Landing
‘Blackwater’ is the episode in which Stannis Baratheon’s fleet besieges King’s Landing. The brother of the late King Robert intends to seize the Iron Throne and take it away from Joffrey Baratheon, whom he considers an illegitimate king. Meanwhile, Queen Cersei Lannister acquires a potent poison, which she intends to use against herself and her children in case of defeat. Rumors suggest that Stannis is using dark forces to break his enemies, all through the powerful spell of a mysterious priestess.
Although Stannis Baratheon is convinced that victory is imminent, his enemies use the reserves of Valyrian fire to surprise the would-be king’s fleet. At first, the battle turns in Stannis’ favor, but then he loses his advantage, and his defeat is humiliating. As Cersei is about to ingest the poison, her father Tywin Lannister informs her that the battle is won. Stannis will never achieve his goal.
‘Blackwater’ is episode 9 of season 2 of ‘Game of Thrones’ and can be viewed on Max.
