It’s been 15 years since the first 17 original Champions of League of Legends came out: know which ones they are?

Time is unforgiving, and much has happened since League of Legends first hit our computers. We take a walk down memory lane through its OG champions.

It’s been 15 years since the first 17 original Champions of League of Legends came out: know which ones they are?

2023 marks an important year in the history and community of League of Legends, its 15th anniversary. Before becoming the global phenomenon it is today, with tournaments that dwarf any show, Riot Game’s MOBA began its humble beginnings with just 17 champions. Now, with 168 in the roster, it is easy to be amazed at its growth and wonder at what point it managed to have more characters than the original generation of Pokémon.

It is through a post on the Twitter / X account of League of Legends Spain (thanks to our colleagues across the pond) that our journey into the past begins. “Today is the 15th anniversary of the release of the first 17 LoL champions. Which was the first one you tried,” the tweet reads, and well, do you remember them?

Who were the first champions in League of Legends?

If you’ve been looking at the picture for a while and can’t remember their names, don’t worry, we’re here to help:

Some changes in Champions designs during these 15 years

Did you recognize all of them? As you might expect, the design of some of these characters has changed since their debut in 2009. Below is a look at some of the characters that have undergone redesigns over the past 15 years.

One of the most notable changes is Soraka, whose horn, staff, and, well, a lot of her has changed.

On the other hand, we have Fiddlesticks, and boy did he get a real makeover, not only in his art, but in his abilities as a character.

Finally, we have Jax, who has decided not only to be strong enough to hit you with a lamp, but also to show more muscle to make a point.
