It’s official: You can now change your Gmail username, and here’s everything you need to know before doing so

Many users have been asking for this for years, and now it’s finally here: Google has confirmed that it’s now possible to change the name of a Gmail account. The feature is currently being rolled out, and many people (we’ve tried it ourselves) can already change their email address. It’s a quick and easy process, but there are some important things to keep in mind both before and after you do it. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to change your Gmail username

This feature isn’t available to everyone, so you’ll need to go to the name change section to see if it’s available to you (if it’s not available yet, it will be coming soon).

1. Click this link.
2. You’ll see your email address next to the option to change your name.
3. Below that, you can enter the new name you want to use.
4. Just like when you create a new account, the name may already be taken, so you’ll need to choose another one or add numbers until you find one that’s available.

It’s important to know that once you’ve changed it, you can’t do it again for a year, since you can only change your name once every 12 months.

What happens after you change your name?

• If you change an account ending in gmail.com to another one with the same ending, here are the key points to keep in mind.
• Your previous Google account email address will become an alternate email address.
• You’ll receive emails at both addresses.
• The data saved in your account won’t be affected. This includes photos, messages, and emails sent to your previous email address.
• You can switch back to your old email address at any time, but you won’t be able to create another Google account email address ending in gmail.com for the next 12 months. You also can’t delete your new email address.
• You can sign in with your old or new email address to Google services, such as Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google Play, or Drive.
