It’s the world’s new obsession and has broken the record for the film with the most Oscar nominations

The horror genre rarely disappoints; when a movie is a hit, it becomes a phenomenon, even if it’s a niche one. And last year was marked by two powerful films: ‘Weapons’ and ‘Sinners,’ the latter becoming the most Oscar-nominated film in history, with a total of 16 nominations. However, 2026 is off to a flying start and already has two horror films among the year’s biggest hits: ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession.’ Well, the latter has just snatched a record—twice over—from the film starring Michael B. Jordan, becoming the highest-grossing original film of the decade.

‘Obsession’ Surpasses ‘Sinners’

‘Obsession’ premiered in the United States on May 15 after its debut at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it had already caused a sensation. So much so that the film has become a true horror movie phenomenon, turning into a box office smash. In fact, it has already grossed $373 million worldwide, thereby snatching one of ‘Sinners’'s several records.

Let’s remember that the film directed by Ryan Coogler grossed $370 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing live-action film with an original screenplay of this decade. In other words, a film that isn’t a sequel, prequel, adaptation, or remake. A film with a completely new and original screenplay. And thanks to the success of ‘Obsession’, the new film starring Inde Navarrette has snatched the record away from the vampire movie.

But the most surprising thing about this is that ‘Obsession’ has outperformed ‘Sinners’ despite costing less than 1% as much. ‘Obsession’ had a budget of just $750,000, while ‘Sinners’ cost no less than $90 million. Yet another example of how money isn’t everything.

“After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price,” the official synopsis tells us.
