Jack Black was not the first choice: This was the actor originally cast in the lead role in ‘A Minecraft Movie’

A Minecraft Movie’ continues to be a box office success. Although it seems to be aimed at a very specific audience, its impact has been undeniable. Part of its success can be attributed to its high-profile cast, particularly Jack Black, who plays Steve. However, all indications are that Black, despite his experience in video game movies, was not the first choice for the role.

How the latest Hollywood strike took away the original Steve

According to a report from Puck, Jack Black was not the actor originally chosen to play Steve. The role was intended for Matt Berry, a British actor known for his roles in What We Do in the Shadows and The IT Crowd. However, Berry had to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts caused by the 2023 Hollywood Actors Strike. In the end, Berry did participate in the film, but only with a small cameo as a villager in the post-credits scene.

Berry’s involvement has been known for some time, but Warner had not revealed what his role would be. It’s also worth remembering that Jack Black was originally set to voice a talking pig. All indications are that after the strike, internal changes in the production led to Black being promoted to the lead role.

Undoubtedly, the way Matt Berry would have intoned phrases like “chicken jockey” or “flint and steel” would have given the character a very different tone. Something that many fans of The IT Crowd can easily imagine after recalling Douglas Reynholm’s iconic introduction.
