DC Studios

James Gunn leaves ‘Shazam: Fury of the Gods’ and more outside of its DC Universe

Gunn continues to define what the new DC Universe is going to look like on the big screen, and unfortunately, that means many projects are being left out of the picture.

Shazam!

Although some past statements by James Gunn may have led to misunderstandings regarding films such as ‘Shazam!: Fury of the Gods’ and ‘Black Adam’, the director and producer, now in charge of DC Studios with Peter Safran, is clear. It was not difficult to imagine this conclusion after inflammatory statements by Zachary Levy (Shazam) and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Black Adam), but in case there was any doubt, Gunn makes it clear: Those movies are not part of the new DC Universe.

Emilia Harcourt and John Economos, characters from ‘Peacemaker’ -whose second season will be part of the new canon - try to recruit Billy Batson (Shazam) for their Justice Society in a scene from ‘Shazam!: Fury of the Gods’, which led to misunderstandings that Gunn wants to rule out 100%. “You don’t need to be confused, It’s not canon. I don’t know now or then what Harcourt or Economos have to do with the Justice Society.”

In fact, Gunn already expressed his discontent with the appearance of ‘Peacemaker’ characters in films planned to come out before he took the reins of DC Studios.

Gunn, on the inspiration for the ‘Superman’ logo and the start of the DC Universe

The first production that will be properly canon of Gunn’s new DC Universe will be ‘Creature Commandos’, an animated series to be released this coming December on MAX. After it, the first and highly anticipated film of this first chapter, titled Gods and Monsters, will be ‘Superman’. “I think of them as individual stories that are part of a universe,” Gunn said. They both exist separately, and I don’t see them as an introduction, even though ‘Creature Commandos’ comes first.”

Meanwhile, Gunn acknowledged that the ‘Superman’ logo on his version of the character is inspired by the ‘Kingdom Come’ comics, a story by Mark Waid and Alex Ross. This story presents a future in which almost all of humanity has some type of superpower, which turns them all into vigilantes. In the midst of the chaos, Lex Luthor takes the opportunity to form his own group of villains, which causes the original Justice League to return to solve the problems caused by this new reality. However, nothing seems to indicate that Gunn intends to draw inspiration from this plot.

Superman’ will be released on July 11, 2025.
