James Gunn promises that season two of Peacemaker will have plenty of surprises: “There might even be one really, really, really big cameo”
The series, starring John Cena, will fully connect with Superman and the new DCU.

James Gunn has once again stirred up DCU fans. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the creator of Peacemaker and current head of the DC cinematic universe revealed that the second season of the series will be full of surprises and characters connected to Superman, as well as a possible gigantic cameo that will catch viewers off guard: “There might even be one really, really, really big cameo,” he confessed.
The new batch of episodes will expand Christopher Smith’s story and strengthen ties to the renewed DCU. Familiar faces from the upcoming Superman movie will appear, including Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). Gunn revealed that in the first episode, Peacekeeper will try to join their group, but they won’t take him seriously. “He’s not taken seriously,” the director explains. “He’s still considered a punchline among all of the other metahumans.” Despite having saved the world at the end of the first season, the character played by John Cena will start this new stage with his self-esteem in tatters.
A season full of surprises and Superman connections
There will also be new additions to the cast, such as Langston Fleury (Tim Meadows) and Sasha Bordeaux (Sol Rodriguez), as well as the return of Judomaster in a more important role. Michael Rooker, Gunn’s longtime collaborator, will play Red St. Wild, an eagle hunter who will become Eagly’s archenemy. “We thought Eagly was probably the most popular character from season 1,” assures the showrunner. And yes, we will again have a credits sequence with dancing.... With Eagly included! Although the iconic Wig Wam song won’t be used, Gunn promises equally powerful choreography, this time to the beat of a new song that better reflects the emotional tone of season 2.
The wait has been long (more than three years since the end of S1), but Gunn says it will be worth it. The delay was due in part to his work on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ and, subsequently, his signing on as director of the new DCU. That allowed him to integrate ‘Peacemaker Season 2’ into the new canon more organically. “It’s very much connected to Superman and it’s very much connected to what comes after,” he stated. Season 2 of ‘The Peacemaker’ premieres August 21 on HBO Max. According to Gunn, we’re in for a story with more emotion, more comedy and, many more surprises than the first. Are you ready for the return of the DCU’s most politically incorrect anti-hero?
