James Gunn reveals why Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’ won’t be part of his new DCU

The new DC Studios director just revealed why Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight from The Batman won’t be a part of the new DC Universe.

James Gunn will begin its new DCU in 2025 with the premiere of ‘Superman Legacy’, a new movie which will kick off the director’s next DC superhero cinematic universe. And this implies a series of new productions with new characters, actors and actresses, leaving behind the current DCEU and its representations. But what happens to the Matt Reeves version of Batman, interpreted by Robert Pattinson? It is clear that it was an ideal opportunity to introduce the character to this new shared universe. James Gunn himself clarified why he won’t have The Battinson in his new DCU.

Why won’t Battinson be in the new DCU?

James Gunn responded to a Threads user about the reason why he will not have Robert Pattinson’s Batman for his new shared universe of DC films and series. Gunn has been clear about this: “It’s not an ‘allowed’ thing, it’s Matt’s choice, and we respect that” said the director of DC Studios and the upcoming ‘Superman Legacy’.

And the new DCU will have its own version of the Dark Knight who will star in his own movie, ‘The Brave and the Bold’, still without a release date or casting for the role. All in all, Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s Batman will be part of the so-called Elseworlds line of films, which take place on alternative lines to the main universe of James Gunn and Peter Safran, as is the case of ‘Joker’ with Joaquin Phoenix.

In addition, Gunn offered a small update on the sequel to ‘The Batman’, ensuring that he has heard concepts from Matt Reeves himself but that he still hasn’t read the script. Be that as it may, Matt Reeves’ own universe continues to expand; so much so, that before a sequel Penguin series, starring Colin Farrell after his debut in ‘The Batman’, will premiere at the end of 2024 in Max.
