James Gunn was already planning his DC Universe long before Henry Cavill’s return as Superman
Nathan Fillion, the actor playing Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern in the upcoming ‘Superman’, shared a past conversation he had with the current head of DC Studios.
After the end of the now extinct DCEU, many fans of DC Comics are waiting for what James Gunn and Peter Safran are preparing for the next DC Universe, which will start in July 2025 with the release of ‘Superman’, although before that we’ll be able to enjoy the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ as the true beginning of the first chapter known as Gods and Monsters. Although not all followers are happy with this new direction for the company, criticizing some of the filmmaker’s decisions, especially with everything that has to do with the previous era of said cinematic universe.
The frustrated return of Henry Cavill as Superman
Now, actor Nathan Fillion adds more fuel to the fire following recent statements to Collider, in which he confirmed that James Gunn was already planning his new universe long before Henry Cavill’s failed return as Superman in the infamous post-credits scene of ‘Black Adam’, casting doubt on the calendar of events shared by Gunn himself. And as Fillion has revealed, Gunn assured him that he would be Guy Gardner in June 2021, coinciding with the premiere of ‘Suicide Squad’ directed by Gunn himself.
“We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and he was in a huge crowd of people. We saw each other in the crowd and I congratulated him, ‘Oh, my God, that was amazing. It’s so great.’ He goes, ‘Hey, did Peter [Safran] tell you what we’ve got for you next?’ I said, ‘No, he hasn’t said.’ He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. We were in a throng of people, but he leaned over and said, ‘You’re gonna be Guy Gardner,’” revealed Fillion.
With these statements, we can connect the dots and figure out that James Gunn and Peter Safran were already designing their DC universe long before its official presentation, in November 2022. Or what is the same; many of the plans made later or in parallel such as the famous slogan “The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change” from Dwayne Johnson or the promise to Henry Cavill to return as Superman were already sentenced ahead of time.
Be that as it may, we will see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner in the upcoming ‘Superman’ (formerly known as ‘Superman Legacy’) by James Gunn scheduled for July 2025.
