Update:

Ever since NVIDIA unveiled DLSS 5, the latest version of its rendering technology, social media has been abuzz. Using AI, the neural rendering system adds lighting effects and photorealistic elements, a move that some have harshly criticized because it appears to alter the original artistic intent. However, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed these concerns and insisted that people are misunderstanding the technology.

“Well, first of all, they’re completely wrong”, has declared to Tom’s Hardware. “The reason for that is because, as I have explained very carefully, DLSS 5 fuses controllability of the of geometry and textures and everything about the game with generative AI”.

Does it alter the developers’ artistic vision?

The executive explained that developers can adjust the AI to match the artistic style of their game. Although DLSS 5 adds generative capabilities to the game’s existing geometry, that doesn’t mean it “doesn’t change the artistic control.” It is not a frame-level post-processing system, but rather a geometry-level one.

Huang has suggested that developers can experiment with the tool and decide how they want to use it: “All of that is under the direct control of the game developer,” he said. “This is very different from generative AI; it’s content-controlled generative AI. That’s why we call it neural rendering.”
